How Is Fabric Weight Measured?

Fabric weight is measured in GSM or ounces, and both describe how heavy a fabric is per unit of area. Knits like fleece and jersey are usually rated in GSM, while cotton and canvas are rated in ounces per square yard.

  • GSM (grams per square meter): higher GSM means a denser, warmer, heavier fabric
  • Ounces per square yard: common for canvas and cotton — a 12 oz canvas is much heavier than a 4 oz canvas
  • Millimeters: used for felt, which is measured by thickness rather than weight

Which Fabrics Stretch and Which Do Not?

Only fabrics that contain spandex stretch in a meaningful way. Knits give slightly, and wovens hold their shape. Matching stretch to your pattern prevents baggy seams and tight fits.

  • 4-way stretch: nylon spandex and cotton spandex jersey — for swimwear, activewear, and fitted apparel
  • Slight give: polar fleece and faux fur move a little but are not stretch fabrics
  • No stretch: canvas, flannel, broadcloth, poplin, and gingham hold a stable shape

How Do You Choose Fabric Weight for a Project?

Match the fabric weight to the wear the finished item will take. Heavier fabrics hold structure; lighter fabrics drape and breathe. Use this quick guide to narrow the choice.

  • Structure and durability: heavyweight canvas (10–12 oz) for bags and upholstery
  • Warmth: 200 GSM polar fleece for blankets and outerwear
  • Everyday apparel: lightweight broadcloth, poplin, and flannel for shirts and quilts
  • Fit and movement: 4-way stretch spandex for swimwear and leggings
