Working With Fleece

• Find the stretch: Fleece stretches slightly across the width and not along the length. Cut blanket panels so the stretch runs side to side.
• Right side: Pull along a cut edge — fleece curls towards the right side. Useful when both faces look similar.
• Needle: A ballpoint or stretch needle avoids skipped stitches on the knit surface.
• Stitch: A narrow zigzag or a walking foot keeps seams from stretching out.
• Edges: No hemming needed. Raw edges will not fray.
• Pressing: Do not iron. Polyester fleece melts and flattens under heat — finger-press seams instead.

2. Tumble dry low or air dry. High heat damages the pile.
3. Skip fabric softener — it coats the fibres and reduces loft over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does anti-pill actually mean?

Untreated fleece forms small balls of loose fibre on the surface after repeated washing. An anti-pill finish stabilises those surface fibres so the fabric keeps a smooth face for far longer. It matters most on items washed often, such as blankets and children's clothing.

Do I need to hem fleece?

No. Fleece is a knit and does not fray, so raw edges can be left exposed. That is what makes no-sew projects possible.

Does polar fleece shrink?

Polyester fleece does not shrink meaningfully in a cold wash. Pre-washing is not required.

What is the difference between the solid colours and the prints?

Both are the same 200 GSM anti-pill fleece. The 18 solids are dyed throughout; the 24 prints carry the design on the face side. Solids and prints are often paired as the two layers of a tie blanket.

Is fleece warm enough for outerwear?

At 200 GSM this is a mid-weight fleece — well suited to pullovers, linings and layering. For a heavy winter shell you would want a windproof outer layer over it.

How does fleece compare to faux fur for blankets?
