How to Choose the Right Fabric Type

Selecting the right fabric type comes down to four questions:

  • Does your project need stretch? If yes, go with stretch fabric. Nylon spandex for high-performance (swim, dance, gym), cotton spandex jersey for everyday comfort (t-shirts, leggings).
  • Does your project need to hold weight or shape? If yes, go with cotton canvas. Heavier ounce = stiffer fabric. 12oz for tool bags, 7oz for totes, 4oz for lightweight projects.
  • Does your project need warmth or texture? If yes, go with fur & fleece. Faux fur for luxury texture (throws, costumes), polar fleece for practical warmth (blankets, jackets).
  • Is it a craft, school, or no-sew project? If yes, go with acrylic felt. Cuts clean, doesn't fray, works with glue - no sewing machine needed.
