How to Choose the Right Fabric

The right fabric depends on three factors: stretch (does your project need to move?), weight (lightweight for draping vs. heavyweight for structure), and care (will it be washed frequently?). Here's a quick guide:

  • Need stretch? Choose nylon spandex (4-way, high stretch) or cotton spandex jersey (moderate stretch)
  • Need structure? Choose cotton canvas (stiff, weight-bearing) or acrylic felt (holds shape without hemming)
  • Need softness? Choose polar fleece (lightweight warmth) or faux fur (luxury texture)
  • Need durability? Choose broadcloth (washes well, resists wrinkles) or 12oz canvas (heavy-duty construction)
  • Need all 40+ colors? Choose acrylic felt or broadcloth - the widest color ranges in our store

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm not sure which fabric I need. Can you help?

Browse our project categories above to find fabrics recommended for your specific use case. Each category includes the best fabric types, their specifications, and why they work well for that project type.

What fabric is best for beginners?

Acrylic felt is the easiest to work with – it doesn't fray, can be glued, and is very forgiving for new crafters. Broadcloth is the best beginner-friendly option for sewing machine projects.

Do you offer project kits or bundles?

We don't currently offer pre-made kits. However, you can browse each project category to find all the fabric types you'll need for your project, and order them all together with free shipping.

Can I use the same fabric for multiple projects?

Many fabrics are versatile. For example, polar fleece works for blankets, jackets, and crafts, while cotton canvas handles bags, upholstery, and home decor.
