Beginner Garment Projects

Never sewn clothing before? Start with these projects ranked by difficulty:

  1. Infinity scarf (Fleece or Jersey) - Cut a rectangle, sew one seam. 15 minutes. No pattern needed.
  2. Simple skirt (Broadcloth) - Rectangle + elastic waistband. 30 minutes. Great first garment.
  3. Pillowcase dress (Broadcloth) - Two rectangles with shoulder ties. Popular for girls' sizes. 45 minutes.
  4. Basic leggings (Spandex) - Two pattern pieces per leg. Requires stretch stitch. 1 hour.
  5. T-shirt (Cotton Spandex Jersey) - Front, back, sleeves, neckband. Standard beginner project. 1-2 hours.

Fabric Care by Type

Cotton Spandex Jersey: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low. Avoid high heat - it breaks down spandex fibers and reduces stretch recovery. Don't wring or twist. Hang dry for longest garment life.

Nylon Spandex: Machine wash cold, hang dry or tumble dry on lowest setting. Never use fabric softener - it coats fibers and reduces moisture-wicking ability. Never iron directly (use a press cloth if needed).

Broadcloth: Machine wash warm, tumble dry medium. The poly-cotton blend resists wrinkles and shrinks less than pure cotton. Iron on medium heat for crisp seams. This is the most low-maintenance apparel fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fabric is best for t-shirts?

Cotton spandex jersey (10oz) is ideal for t-shirts. It has 4-way stretch for comfort, a soft hand feel, and excellent shape retention. It's also great for dresses, leggings, and casual tops.

What is the difference between jersey and broadcloth?

Jersey is a knit fabric with stretch, making it comfortable for close-fitting garments like t-shirts and leggings. Broadcloth is a woven fabric with no stretch, better for structured garments like button-down shirts, skirts, and quilting.

Is nylon spandex comfortable for activewear?

Yes, nylon spandex is the standard fabric for activewear. It wicks moisture, dries quickly, provides compression support, and moves with your body. EOVEA's nylon spandex is perfect for leggings, sports bras, and workout tops.
