The 3-inch pile creates a long, shaggy finish. Before buying fabric for a face, paws or close-fitting detail, test your planned trimming and seam on an offcut; the finished appearance depends on how much pile you remove.

  • Plan the pattern first: Lay out each color's pieces within the 60-inch nominal fabric width, allowing for seams, trimming and pile direction. A full costume has no single guaranteed yardage.
  • Keep the pile direction consistent: Arrange matching pieces with the pile running the same way. Rotating a piece to save fabric can change its appearance.

  • Cutting: Always cut from the back with a craft knife or razor blade — never use scissors through the pile. This preserves the fur fibers along the seam.
  • Sewing: Use a walking foot, polyester thread, and a 3–4mm stitch length. Sew with the pile direction (stroke the fur — it should feel smooth going down).
  • Pinning: Use clips instead of pins to avoid damaging the pile. Or pin from the back only.
  • Seam finishing: After sewing, use a pin or needle to pull trapped fur fibers out of the seam for an invisible join.
  • Cleanup: Shake out loose fibers outdoors after cutting. A lint roller handles the rest.
