No-Sew Tie Blanket: Step-by-Step

The no-sew tie blanket is one of the easiest and most rewarding fabric projects. No sewing machine, no thread, no experience needed - just fabric and scissors.

  1. Cut two fleece pieces to the same size (typically 1.5-2 yards each, 60" wide).
  2. Layer pieces with wrong sides together, edges aligned.
  3. Cut a 4"x4" square from each corner (through both layers) and discard.
  4. Cut fringe strips around all four edges - 1 inch wide, 4-5 inches deep, through both layers.
  5. Tie each pair of strips together in a double knot. Pull snug but don't over-tighten.
  6. Fluff and done! The knotted fringe creates a decorative border.

Pro tip: Use two contrasting colors for the best visual effect. Cut fringe strips consistently - a rotary cutter and ruler make this much faster than scissors.

Blankets as Gifts: Occasion Guide

  • Baby shower: Pastel fleece in pink, blue, yellow, or green. Make a 1-yard baby blanket - easy to wrap and always appreciated.
  • Wedding/housewarming: Faux fur throw in neutral tones (white, grey, brown). Luxurious and useful.
  • Graduation: Fleece in school colors. A no-sew tie blanket makes a personal, handmade gift.
  • Pet owners: Fleece pet bed liners in any color. Machine washable and durable enough for paws and claws.
  • Charity/group events: Standard throw size in bulk. Perfect for blanket-making drives.

Blanket Care & Longevity

Polar fleece blankets: Machine wash warm with mild detergent. Tumble dry low. Avoid fabric softener - it reduces fleece's moisture-wicking ability and can cause pilling. Fleece blankets can last 5-10 years with proper care. They dry faster than cotton blankets, making them ideal for frequent washing.

Faux fur throws: Machine wash cold on gentle cycle, inside out. Air dry or tumble dry on lowest heat setting. After drying, brush gently with a wide-tooth comb to restore the pile's fluffiness. With proper care, faux fur throws maintain their luxurious appearance for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fabric is best for no-sew blankets?

Polar fleece is the #1 fabric for no-sew tie blankets. It doesn't fray, is easy to cut and knot, and is incredibly soft. Most blankets use two 1.5-yard pieces in coordinating colors.

How much fabric do I need for a throw blanket?

For a standard throw blanket (50x60 inches), you need approximately 1.5 to 2 yards of fabric. For a larger blanket or one with generous fringe for tying, get 2 yards to be safe.

Is faux fur good for blankets?

Faux fur makes luxurious, cozy throw blankets. It's heavier than fleece and provides more warmth. EOVEA faux fur is machine washable and available in 28+ colors and textures.
