The weight of cotton canvas determines its stiffness, durability, and ideal use. EOVEA offers four weights, each serving different project needs:
| Weight | Thickness | Feel | Best Uses | Needle Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4oz Lightweight | ~0.3mm | Soft, drapey | Tote bags, craft projects, linings, curtains | Universal 80/12 |
| 7oz Medium | ~0.5mm | Moderate body | Market bags, aprons, light upholstery, tablecloths | Universal 90/14 |
| 10oz Heavy | ~0.7mm | Sturdy, firm | Everyday tote bags, cushion covers, slipcovers | Heavy-duty 100/16 |
| 12oz Duck Cloth | ~0.9mm | Very sturdy, rigid | Tool bags, duffels, upholstery, outdoor covers | Heavy-duty 110/18 |
"Duck cloth" and "canvas" are often used interchangeably, and for good reason - they're essentially the same fabric. Both are plain-weave cotton with a tight, durable construction. The term "duck" comes from the Dutch word "doek" meaning cloth. In practice, "duck cloth" typically refers to heavier weights (10oz-12oz), while "canvas" is used across all weights. When shopping, focus on the ounce weight rather than the name - that's what determines the fabric's performance.

Cotton canvas's flat, tight weave makes it one of the best fabrics for custom printing and decoration:
| Canvas Weight | Needle | Thread | Stitch Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4oz-7oz | Universal 80/12 or 90/14 | All-purpose polyester | 2.5-3mm |
| 10oz | Jeans/Denim 100/16 | Heavy-duty or upholstery | 3-3.5mm |
| 12oz | Jeans/Denim 110/18 | Upholstery or bonded nylon | 3.5-4mm |
| Broadcloth | Universal 70/10 or 80/12 | All-purpose polyester | 2-2.5mm |
Cotton canvas: Machine washable. Expect slight shrinkage on first wash (~3-5%) - pre-wash before cutting if precise measurements matter. Canvas gets softer with each wash while maintaining structural integrity. Iron on medium-high heat. For bags and upholstery, occasional spot cleaning is usually sufficient.
Broadcloth: Machine wash warm, tumble dry medium. The 60/40 poly-cotton blend resists wrinkles and shrinks less than pure cotton. Iron on medium heat. Broadcloth maintains its smooth, even weave through repeated washing, making it ideal for quilts, garments, and items that see frequent laundering.
